The American president, Barack Obama, has urged the Supreme Court to not take up the case filed in July by the Electronic Privacy Information Centre (EPIC).
EPIC believes that the NSA has exceeded its authority by carrying out global extensive communications and monitoring surveillance. They want it stopped!
The Washington Post reported that the NSA are collecting email and instant messenger contact lists from hundreds of millions of everyday citizens globally, but many of them are Americans.
NSA Documentation shows that within a single day of 2012, the NSA gathered 444,743 email address books from Yahoo, 105,068 email address books from Hotmail, 82,857 email address books from Facebook, 33,696 email address books from Gmail and 22,881 email address books from unspecified sources. This is more than 250 million annually!
The NSA failed to confirm the allegations in the report, however defended its surveillance actions as legal and respectful of privacy rights.
