Millions of customer’s personal details have been compromised following the hacking of the Sony Playstation Network Platform in April 2011. Personal details compromised includes, names, addresses, email addresses, account passwords as well as payment details, leaving many customers at risk of identity theft.

The substantial monetary penalty reflects the seriousness of the breach. The Investigation by the Information Commissioner’s Office into the case established that the attack could have been avoided and with the use of the current technologies available at the time, personal details could have been made secure.

Being a technically savvy business this cannot be excused. They had the know-how and resources to ensure that the correct security was in place however the available security was poor.

It is essential that consumers are cautious when handing over there personal details. We should ensure we take the necessary steps to keep our information secure.
